Walls

Two walled cities.

Baku's Icherisheher, with its 11th–12th-century walls, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.

İznik's walls date back to Roman times and still ring the town with four main gates. In both cities, the old town goes on living inside its walls.

History

İznik was the first Seljuk capital.

İznik was the first capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, from 1077 to 1097, before the capital moved to Konya.

The Seljuks also left their mark on the lands of today's Azerbaijan, so a traveller from Baku walks through a history that feels familiar.

A day

A day in İznik.

  • Roman-era city walls whose gates still stand.
  • A basilica built around AD 390, spotted under the lake in aerial photographs in 2014.
  • The town of the First Council of 325, whose 1700th anniversary was marked here in November 2025.
  • The excavated tile kilns, and workshops still using traditional methods.
