01 · The Name
Two words in dialogue, a third revealed to the heart.
At first glance, two lines greet the eye: ABOUT resting above, İZNIQUE rooted below.
One speaks of an origin—of things born of this land; the other carries the city’s ancient breath into the contemporary world.
Yet when the gaze lingers, an intimate encounter takes place along the right flank. Reading downwards, eight quiet letters (BOUT and IQUE) merge into a single rhythm: BOUTIQUE.
This is no accident. The letters were aligned by the true edges of the ink rather than the boxes around them, with an artisan’s care for balance and space. The eye perceives two words, then discovers the hidden third. Much like İznik itself: it reveals its true depth only to those who pause and look closer.
02 · The Root
Boutique: The ancient art of sheltering what is cherished.
Today, boutique evokes the rare, the intimate, and the discerning. Yet the word carries a lineage far older than modern commerce. Traced back through Old Provençal and Latin, it finds its origin in the ancient Greek apothēkē—literally “a place where things are put away”: a quiet vault where what is precious is kept safe.
This echoes the very destiny of İznik.
After 301 BC, the Macedonian ruler Lysimachus took this lakeside city and renamed it after his late wife: Nicaea. The city became a living memorial to her, and it has carried her name for more than twenty-three centuries.
The word hidden in our emblem and the ancient name of this city both grew from the same tongue: Greek. One speaks of guarding what is cherished; the other remains an enduring act of remembrance.
03 · The Suffix
Four letters woven into heritage: -ique.
Appending the suffix -ique to İznik is more than a typographic gesture; it is an invitation for ancient soil to converse in a global tongue.
Shared with the word unique, and closing with the resonant cadence of boutique, it speaks of singular rarity and timeless belonging.
A local eye immediately discerns the historic soul of İznik. A traveller arriving from London, Paris or further afield reads the name effortlessly—sensing its poise and distinct elegance even before laying eyes upon the lake.
04 · The Emblem
The crown of the İ: Water, leaf, and petal in a single breath.
The dotted capital İ is a distinctive character of the Turkish alphabet, rarely seen elsewhere in Latin script. In About İznique, its dot becomes a living insignia: The Curve (Kıvrım).
A single, continuous stroke, it holds the soul of the landscape within its silhouette:
- The Body: A teardrop of water, reflecting Lake İznik—a tranquil inland sea resting 85 metres above sea level, mirror to the sky.
- The Tail: An olive leaf, honouring the silver-green groves that have guarded these shores for millennia.
- The Crest: The delicate sweep of a tulip petal—the quintessential signature of classical İznik ceramic art.
The emblem leans softly. Not upright like a flame, nor falling like rain, but drifting weightlessly like a morning breeze over still water. It does not sever itself from the letter; it hovers as a natural, poetic crown.
05 · Colour
A quietude born of earth and fire.
From the late fifteenth century, in the ateliers of İznik, mastery unfolded at the pace of the kiln. First came the luminous white ground, kissed by pure cobalt blue. Around 1520, copper oxide introduced the radiant turquoise. The intricate motifs were framed by tahrir—the crisp, unwavering black contour line drawn by a master’s breathless hand.
We returned to that quiet alchemy, selecting three deliberate tones:
- Cream #F7F4EE
The warm white ground of the tile body. - Turquoise #14746E
The meeting of lake horizon and imperial glazes. - Ink #101A1E
The disciplined, profound stroke that gives shape to form.
We deliberately left out the famous coral red. Celebrated as it is, it would have been too loud for an identity that seeks serenity rather than spectacle. No gradients, no artificial lustre; only flat colour and a quiet, timeless composure.
06 · The Process
Three trials: Against light, scale, and matter.
An emblem of true purpose must live beyond the glass of a digital screen. Before taking its final shape, The Curve endured three rigorous trials:
- The Test of Light: Stripped of all colour, reduced to pure silhouette, does its identity remain undeniable?
- The Test of Scale: Distilled to a 16-pixel icon, does it preserve its poise and recognition?
- The Test of Substance: Chiselled into solid oak at a single cut depth, does it honour the grain of the wood?
Every superfluous line dissolved in these trials. What remained was an unadorned, resilient essence. The typography followed the same discipline: set in Albert Sans, with weights adjusted for each size, so that the brand speaks with the exact same quiet confidence whether pressed onto a cotton card or carved into architectural stone.
07 · The Brand
Nava Turkey and About İznique: A way of seeing a place.
Nava Turkey is a tourism investment and hospitality brand: it builds and runs places to stay, guided by the spirit of the land around them. In İznik, that work is taking shape as LOTT İznik, set on the quiet hillsides of Şerefiye and looking out across the lake.
About İznique is Nava Turkey’s brand for İznik. More than a place name, it describes a way of looking, unhurried and attentive, turned towards a timeless landscape.
Frequently asked questions
What does the name About İznique evoke?
It speaks of everything that belongs to İznik, while the alignment of its letters quietly reveals a third word, BOUTIQUE: the town’s deep roots and a refined way of living, held in one name.
What is the meaning behind the insignia above the İ?
Known as The Curve (Kıvrım), it unites the water drop of Lake İznik, the leaf of its ancient olive groves, and the graceful sweep of an imperial tulip motif into a single, flowing gesture.
Where do the brand’s colours come from?
Directly from classical İznik ceramic art: the warm cream of the tile’s white ground, the turquoise of the glazes, and the deep ink of the master’s contour line. Vibrant red was intentionally set aside to keep the identity serene and understated.
